About the 8 Moments for Targeted Hygiene

There is a misconception that facilities can be kept hygienic by regular cleaning of all surfaces. However, infections are mostly spread by people interacting with each other - either directly (by touch or airborne routes) or via surfaces commonly touched by others - or via infected foods/food surfaces.

Effective hygiene happens when people identify the moments during their daily lives when infections are most likely to be spread and take appropriate hygiene action to prevent infection transmission.

Working exclusively with experts*, we have identified 8 key moments of high risk for spreading infection in workplaces and public facilities. In addition to frequent disinfection of commonly touched surfaces, all people working in or visiting these places can help reduce the risk of spreading infection by sanitising or washing their hands at these moments:

Professor Bloomfield is a Consultant in Hygiene and Infectious Disease Prevention, Chairman and member of the Scientific Advisory Board of IFH and Honorary Professor, London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, London, UK. Professor Bloomfield is an acknowledged expert on home hygiene, with more than 30 years’ experience in hygiene research and education.
