Happy Hands, a contest that asks students in the 50 United States and District of Columbia attending K-12 schools to design a soap dispenser that conveys the importance of proper hand hygiene in a creative manner, kicked off August 15.  Happy Hands began as an extension of the “Soap Dispenser Design” contest that the Deb Group, which was later acquired by and is now known as SC Johnson Professional USA, Inc., offered to students from Anchorage School District during the fall of 2015. It was expanded nationally to promote consistent and proper hand hygiene among children in a fun and creative way.

Hand hygiene is vital in helping to reduce the spread of germs in schools, in particular with the threat of SARS-CoV-2, which causes COVID-19, as students return to school[1]. Encouraging children and young adults to follow a routine of handwashing will help instill a habit of positive hand hygiene compliance that can continue into adulthood.

Back for its fourth year, the contest has evolved to offer bigger (and better) prizes for the finalists. This year, the design with the most votes in each category will receive $1,000 for the two grand prize winners’ school, a $300 gift card for each student, and up-to 1,000 1-Liter manual soap/sanitizer dispensers featuring the winning design. There are two categories - one for elementary schools (K-5) and one for middle/high schools (6-12). Submissions must promote the use of soap or hand washing, and are evaluated for visual appeal, overall design, creativity, and unique design elements.

Additionally, the first 50 teachers to submit 15 or more student designs will receive a prize basket that includes a variety of SC Johnson® products to keep classrooms clean and organized, such as hand sanitizer, Refresh® Azure FOAM hand soap, Ziploc® brand bags, Windex® Multi-Surface Disinfectant Sanitizer Cleaner and more.

Encouraging students to create a design is a fun reminder to continue instilling proper hand washing habits. Register your school now at  happyhands.scjp.com to participate.  Submissions must be postmarked by November 30, 2020!

Finalists in all categories will be announced by February 2, 2021. The public will be able to vote for their favorite designs beginning February 2, 2021 at 9:00 a.m. ET until February 28, 2021 at 11:59 p.m. ET. The official grand prize winners will be announced on or about April 1, 2021.
